Networked Society ‘On the Brink’

“There has not been a time… in history that has enabled such rapid change… in the most optimistic view which is also simultaneously the most pessimistic view; a time that is enabling humans to be more of what we are.” Technologist and co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto, David Weinberger, expresses this profound idea regarding the abilities of technology at the beginning of Networked Society ‘On the Brink.’  While the statement, true as it is, offers the notion that there is as much potential for new possibilities and freedoms as there is for restriction and domination, the overall sentiment of this twenty-minute movie, expressed through a patchwork of interviews and crisp photography, is heavily weighted in favour of the positive side.  Despite the fact that a huge set of possibilities to watch for and guard against is more or less ignored, it still manages to be a really fun look at the future — definitely worth checking out.
